Spring Brewing at Beer Grains — Melissa’s Session IPA, M3 Malts, and Escarpment Yeast

Beer Grains Avatar

Spring is finally here, and it is the perfect time to dust off your brew kettle and plan your next batch. We have a lot happening this month — a new collaboration recipe kit for a great cause, a major malt supplier transition, yeast pre-orders, and deep discounts on equipment.

Melissa’s Session IPA — Brew for a Cause

The Melissa’s Session IPA All Grain Kit is our latest collaboration recipe kit, and this one comes with a purpose. $2 from every kit sold goes directly to the Pink Boots Society, an organization dedicated to supporting women and non-binary individuals in the beverage industry.

Session IPAs are a fantastic spring style — all the hop character you love in an IPA, but at a lower ABV that lets you enjoy a few without slowing down your afternoon. They are perfect for outdoor brewing sessions and patio sipping as the weather warms up.

Spring brewing season

M3 Malts Base Grains Arriving April 23rd

Mississippi Mills Malting Co. (M3 Malts)

We are transitioning our base malt supply to M3 Malts, and the first bulk shipment arrives on April 23rd. Here is what will be available:

  • 2 Row — the workhorse base malt for nearly every ale and lager recipe; clean and neutral with enough enzymatic power for any mash
  • Pilsen Malt — lighter and more delicate than 2 Row, the foundation of pilsners, lagers, and Belgian styles
  • Vienna Malt — adds a gentle biscuit and toast character; essential for Vienna lagers, Oktoberfest, and Marzen styles
  • English Pale Malt — biscuity and slightly more characterful than North American 2 Row; the traditional base for bitters, ESBs, and English pale ales

Note that we are phasing out our remaining InnoMalt 25 kg bags, so grab those while they last if you have a preferred InnoMalt variety.

Escarpment Labs Yeast — Cycle 3 and 4 Pre-Orders

Pre-orders for Escarpment Labs Cycles 3 and 4 open at the end of April. This cycle features the Kveik and Mexican Lager seasonal strains:

  • Ebbegarden Kveik — a clean-finishing Norwegian farmhouse strain that works beautifully in hop-forward beers
  • Hornindal Kveik — adds layers of tropical fruit and stone fruit character from the yeast itself; ferments clean at temperatures up to 35C
  • Voss Kveik — produces a distinctive orange citrus note and ferments incredibly fast, even at high temperatures
  • Mexican Lager — a clean lager strain perfect for brewing crisp, refreshing Mexican-style lagers and light beers for summer

Kveik strains are a game-changer for homebrewers without dedicated fermentation temperature control. They thrive at room temperature and above, producing clean results in a fraction of the time traditional yeast strains need.
